Relocation and Job Search
The amount of lead time you will need to secure a new job in a new location will depend on a number of factors. When you're planning to relocate, when is the best time to start looking for a job? How much in advance should you start a job search? What's the best way to job hunt long distance? There are ways to get ready to relocate and to have a job waiting for you when you arrive.
For a variety of reasons we sometimes find ourselves in a position of launching a job search in a city other than where we currently live. The idea of conducting a job search in another city is kind of daunting, especially if you’re not too familiar with the city.
Do you have a relative, friend or acquaintance that you can stay with in the new location while interviewing? If so, consider using that address on your resume and your cover letters. Local job search can give you a sense of the quantity of suitable jobs in your new location. Our network is generally the most developed where we live. This constitutes neighbors, co-workers, friends and maybe relatives. They may be able to give you advice on housing, transportation, entertainment and everything else you will need to know about your new community.
Use tools like salary calculators and cost of living calculators to determine whether you new salary will pay the bills in the local area where you want to work. Salary and cost of living calculators will help you figure out how much you will need to earn in your new location to match what you're earning now. Paycheck calculators will help you determine your take home pay. Don't expect an employer (unless it's for that hard to fill or high level executive position) to pay your moving and other relocation expenses. It's probably not going to happen unless you are much more qualified than the local candidates and they absolutely have to have you.
When you really want to move sooner rather than later, be open minded and flexible about the jobs you are willing to take. Again, it's easier to find a local job when you are there, so, you may want to broaden your options to make the move.
